Annabelle's Top 10 Favorite Rom-Coms
I will talk about these films forever, but I will not argue.
Good evening OONS, or one of my newsletter subscribers if you’re uncultured. If you didn’t know, it was my (Annabelle’s) birthday on Monday. Yes, the rumors are true! I am an Aquarius. On January 25th, I turned 22 for one day only, because if capitalism has taught me anything, it’s that 21 is Forever. I blasted Taylor Swift, I ate pasta, I may or may not have blacked out. All in a day’s work.
In honor of my birthday, Fletcher suggested that I compile a list of my favorite rom-coms as this week’s newsletter. And well, who am I to refuse? Here are my top 10 favorite rom-coms, maybe not of all time, but at least for tonight.
10. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Overlooked! This movie raised me. I still have dreams to go to Iceland because of this. And the fact that he did it all with the help of the eHarmony customer support guy? To win the heart of Kristen Wiig? Absolute masterpiece. Sick skateboard scenes too.
9. 10 Things I Hate About You
Heath Ledger x Julia Stiles supremacy. This is the only Shakespeare adaptation (besides Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet) that deserves rights.
8. Before Midnight
Yes, I did not include the first or the second one for a reason. Before Midnight simply rocks. The scene where they are all having dinner together and debating the true meaning of love lives in my mind rent-free. This movie is REAL! Get with it, America.
7. The Kissing Booth
Of course. Our namesake. The first time I watched this I was ROFL. The third time I watched this I was super high and passed out because it was too stimulating. 10/10.
6. The To Do List
Of COURSE, I had to add an Aubrey Plaza classic. I was and still am obsessed with her, in the sense that I simply want to be her at all times. This movie is actually revolutionary in the way that it centers around female sexuality. We wrote about this here if you’re interested.
5. Bridget Jones’ Diary
Shoutout to Fletcher on this one, I recently rewatched this and found it made it to the top of this list. This is probably the best rom-com ending scene in history, except for When Harry Met Sally… Which is exactly why this newsletter works. You’re either a Bridget Jones or a WHMS.
4. Clueless
How could I not include Clueless? You really can’t get more classic than this. I grew up worshiping Alicia Silverstone in both this and that one Nirvana music video. Not to mention that this is one of the best rom-com monologues, ever? Fletcher wrote an incredible version of it, read that here.
3. Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging
This movie is literally epic. So much to say about this… even just the opening stuffed olive scene is hysterical. Ultraviolet is an incredible song, and sex god Robbie is the ORIGINAL Rodrick and overall GOAT. Do NOT sleep on this movie. Download it right now. I’m not joking.
2. Mamma Mia
This film raised me. When I was 8 years old, my family friends and I used to have a list of “traditions” that we HAD to do at every sleepover and watching Mamma Mia was one of them. I define the eras of my life through my current favorite Mamma Mia song (right now it’s ‘Chiquitita’) and will do so until the day I DIE!
1. When Harry Met Sally…
Obviously, this is number one. Obviously. I have a brand to uphold. I’m not going to go into this, because I already did in our New Year’s issue, which you can read here. But this stays winning! It’s a classic. Though who knows, maybe I’ll feel differently in a few years.
